Jules Verdone is a Baltimore-born, Boston-based singer/songwriter with a knack for emotional detail and dry wit in her first-person lyrics. This is evidenced to greatest effect on the coolly dismissive "Everything's Your Fault," from this, Verdone's 1998 debut.
DIARY OF A LIAR favors straightforward guitar pop somewhere between Matthew Sweet (minus the rock-god posturing) and Holly Beth Vincent (of the cultily adored '80s punk-poppers Holly and the Italians) with less kitschy aggression. As with many debut albums, the songwriting is not as consistent as it might be, though killers like the declamatory "Through My Teeth," "Dumb Rock Song," and "Baltimore or Less" more than make up for one or two songs that are slightly overlong and underdone. DIARY OF A LIAR is a most impressive debut. -- AllMusic Guide
